Hexagram 40, Jie (Deliverance), is Thunder over Water - thunder and rain setting in, then clearing, the storm breaking and the danger dissolving. This is the hexagram of release, of the knot that finally loosens. The judgment points southwest - the level, easy direction - for after deliverance, one should seek rest and return to the ordinary. The lines trace the clean-up after liberation: killing the foxes (removing the last obstacles), delivering oneself from the small toe (cutting off the lingering attachment), and the prince shooting the hawk. Jie teaches that after the crisis passes, act swiftly to clear the residue - and then rest.
